Vice Minister of Agriculture of China Qu Dongyu visited Namibia from January 22 to24 and signed MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEENTHE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AND THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, WATER ANDFORESTRY OF THE REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA ON STRENGTHENING SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION with Hon.John Mutorwa, Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry of Namibia

Vice Minister Qu and Minister John Mutorwa exchanged views on deepening bilateral agricultural cooperation Minister John Mutorwa highly commended the achievements made by China and Namibia in agricultural cooperation and appreciated China's efforts to promote South-South cooperation in Namibia, introduced the agricultural development in Namibia and expressed the expectation that phase 2 of the South-South Cooperation project in Namibia could be implemented as soon as possible. Vice Minister Qu Dongyu said that China and Namibia's agricultural cooperation bears very important political and economic significance. He also pointed out various sectors potential for priority development cooperation and put forward proposals on deepening bilateral agricultural cooperation.He also invited Minister John Mutorwa to visit China.

The signing of the memorandum marks the start of preparation of phase 2 of the South-South Cooperation project in Namibia. The Chinese government, Namibian Government and FAO signed the tripartite agreement on implementing phase I of the South-South Cooperation project in Namibia in May 2014, and the Chinese government dispatched 15 experts and technicians to Namibia for technical assistance, making positive contribution to the agricultural development and food security of Namibia. phase I completed in early 2017 and turned out to be a great success.

On the morning of the 22nd, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu also paid a visit to Hon. Sophia Shaningwa, the newly elected Secretary General of the SWAPO Party, briefed her on the grand occasion of the 19th Chinese National Congress and also exchanged views on issues of promoting the overall development of urban and rural areas. The delegation also visited the Central Laboratory, the largest beef production and processing plant, Meatco.

The local media, including New Era, conducted in-depth coverage of the visit of Chinese agricultural delegation and spoke highly of the progress Ambassador of People's Republic of China to Republic of Namibia, H.E. Mr. Zhang Yiming, and business and commercial counselor of Chinese Embassy, Mr. Liu Huabo accompanied the delegation.
