The Second Batch of Chinese Donations to Namibian Flooded Areas

On 9 April 2009, at the Second Handover Ceremony at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China H. E. Madame Ren Xiaoping further hands over the second batch of flood donations from the Chinese side to Hon. Dr. Libertina Amathila, Deputy Prime Minister of Namibia as follows:

1. The Chinese Government grants one hundred thousand US dollars (US$ 100,000) as an emergency aid to help the Namibian Government to combat the devastating floods in the northern and northeastern parts of the country. This grant is in response to H. E. President Pohamba’s call for aid from the international community, and has highlighted the time-tested friendship and solidarity between the Chinese and Namibian Governments and people. It is expected that this humble donation will be of some help to mitigate the adverse effects of the floods.

2. China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd., a Chinese construction company in Namibia, donates 1000 bedquilts worth N$ 100,000 to the flood victims.

3. Zhonghe Resources (Namibia) Development (Pty) Ltd., a Chinese mining company in Namibia, donates N$ 50,000 to the National Disaster Fund of Namibia as its support to the Namibian Government’s flood relief efforts.

On 1 April 2009, at the First Handover Ceremony, the Chinese Government promised to assist the Namibian Government and people in offering 12 training programs for the post-flood reconstruction including malaria control, HIV/AIDS prevention, emergency medical treatment, etc..And the Chinese Loving Heart Foundation donated the first batch of 1000 bedquilts to the flooded areas.

From 2 to 4 April 2009, the Chinese Ambassador paid a special visit to assess the flood damages together with Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi, Director-General of the National Planning Commission, as well as heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Namibia or their representatives from other countries and organizations.
